An 'All-Star' Jewish Baseball Team

B'nai B'rith Record -
By Bernard Axelrad

On today's major league baseball rosters, there are few Jewish players to be found.

It was not always thus, and it merely reflects the move away from both college and professional sports by the Jewish athlete.

One rainy day, while reflecting on this trend, I decided to peer back into the relatively recent past and came up with the following all-Jewish baseball team.

At first base — Hank Greenberg (Tigers) and Mike Epstein (Angels);

At second base — Buddy Myer (Senators) and Harry Danning (Giants);

At third base — Al Rosen (Indians);

At short stop — Murray Franklin (Tigers);

For catcher — Moe Berg

For pitcher — Sandy Koufax (Dodgers), Ken Holtzman (A's), Steve Stone (Baltimore) and Larry Sherry (Dodgers).

This group would make a pretty fair country ballclub which, while lacking some depth (perhaps some nostalgic reader could add to it?), would have given a good account of itself.

Guess who would like to manage them?
